Search Performance & Analytics Hub

How Google measures search visibility, logs impressions and clicks, calculates average position, and exports bulk data to BigQuery.

1. Search Performance Telemetry

Google Search Console’s Performance report provides first-party telemetry detailing how users discover your domain in Google Search. Unlike third-party ranking tools that sample synthetic SERPs, GSC records actual user impressions, actual user clicks, and aggregate ranking data directly from Google’s serving infrastructure.

4. The 4 Core Metrics Defined

Clicks

A count of user clicks that forwarded the user to a page outside of Google Search. Does not include clicks to expand accordions or preview images within SERP.

Impressions

Recorded whenever a link appears on the search results page the user is viewing, even if the result was not scrolled directly into view.

Average CTR

The percentage of impressions that resulted in a click: (Total Clicks / Total Impressions) × 100.

Average Position

The average ranking of your top URL for a query. Because position varies by device, personalization, and geo-location, it is an aggregate diagnostic metric.
