What are “Striking Distance” Keywords?
In organic search economics, Striking Distance Keywords are queries where your website already ranks between Position 5 and 20 (the bottom of Page 1 and top of Page 2), but captures less than 3% CTR despite accumulating tens of thousands of impressions.
Because your page is already indexed and deemed relevant by Google, moving from Position 8 to Position 3 requires a fraction of the effort compared to ranking a brand new URL from scratch, while yielding a 500% to 1,000% increase in clicks.

Diagnosing & Resolving Keyword Cannibalization
Before optimizing content for a striking distance query, you must check for Keyword Cannibalization.
Cannibalization happens when two or more distinct URLs on your domain compete for the same query. Google oscillates between them, causing ranking instability and preventing either URL from breaking into the top 3.
How to Check for Cannibalization in GSC:
- Click the specific striking distance query to filter the entire report by that single keyword.
- Switch from the Queries tab to the Pages tab.
- Look at the URLs listed:
- If one URL commands 95% of the impressions: No cannibalization. Focus purely on on-page optimization.
- If two or three URLs each split impressions (e.g. 50/50 or 40/60): Active Cannibalization detected!

Remediation Strategies:
- 301 Permanent Redirect: If one page is outdated or inferior, merge its unique sections into the stronger URL and 301 redirect it.
- Canonical Consolidation: Point
<link rel="canonical">from the secondary page to the primary authority page. - Internal Link Recalibration: Ensure internal anchor texts point consistently to the intended master URL.
Quick-Win Optimization Tactics for Striking Distance
Once a clear target URL is established:
- Title Tag Refinement: Rewrite the
<title>to directly front-load the target query and include an attractive modifier (e.g., year, “Guide”, “Checklist”, or numbers). - Missing Subheadings: Add targeted
<h2>or<h3>sections covering the specific sub-questions revealed in the query report. - Internal Link Injections: Link to the target page from 3 to 5 of your highest-authority relevant blog posts or guide pages using exact or partial-match anchor text.
